Young Students Use Simple Coding to Animate Miniature Campsites

More than 300 second and third graders participated in elementary coding classes during the 2022 Summer of Fun. Teachers piloted a platform from SAM Labs that allowed students to perform simple block coding connecting "inputs" with "outputs" and "behaviors." Students used construction and tissue paper to construct miniature campsites, then developed code to animate them. Campfires crackled and lit up; a simulated storm blew tents.

The teachers conducting the pilot are looking at ways to create coding modules of different durations that can be incorporated into teaching across grades from kindergarten to sixth grades. The district is also looking at a more sophisticated platform for use with older students.
