A Holiday Message and Letter from Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Iline Tracey
November 9th, 2020
October 30, 2020
-
Important message for New Haven Public Schools regarding COVID-19. We have seen a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases in the state and now in New Haven. In response to this increase, we are making the following changes to keep the New Haven community safe and reduce the spread of the virus:
First, we will not be opening schools in the hybrid model on November 9th as originally planned. Instead, students will continue remote learning, as they have done since the start of the school year. We know this decision creates a hardship on many New Haven families. The Health Director, Mayor Elicker and I did not make this decision lightly.
Second, student learning hubs that the City operates will be closed indefinitely starting this coming Monday, November 2nd.
It is critical, that you do your part to ensure the virus does not spread. The surge in cases is happening because more and more residents are attending social gatherings, parties, and having other interactions with those outside of their core family group. By not following the COVID-19 guidelines from medical experts, you are risking exposure to others who could then lose their lives to the virus. If the number of cases go back down, we will be able to open up again.
Finally, we continue to offer free COVID-19 testing for anyone in New Haven. Check out the City’s COVID website or call the Health Department at (203) 946-4949 for more information on testing sites. Please be smart about this, New Haven.

- Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is Superintendent, Dr. Iline Tracey.
I trust that all is well. Now that we have launched remote learning, it is time to get a sense of how things are going and how else the District can support you to make this a successful experience for our children. I will be setting up some webinars very soon by schools to hear of your experiences and additional supports that are needed.
NO SCHOOL
School is closed on Monday, September 28, 2020, due to Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.
School is also closed on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, for staff Professional Development Day.
Technology
We have had some technology and internet glitches along the way, and we are working on our side to mitigate what we are able to control. There are some buildings where we discovered that the system is old and is not able to keep up with the volume of internet use. If you continue to experience internet issues, please call the established help line that was shared—familiyhelp.live, or contact your school. By now every child of school age in your household should have received a device. Please reach out to your school if this is not the case. Please work with your child on how to protect the device they receive, because at this juncture, we will not be able to replace it. Please keep the devices charged at all times.
Grading
Grading will follow the regular grading policy, so it is important that students stay engaged and log on to do their work. Last spring, because we were thrust into remote learning without time for preparation, we waived the grading policy, but this time it will not be waived. We also included live instruction. I am glad that many of you are helping the students, but please ensure that the teachers are not interrupted during instruction. Please reach out privately to your teachers if you have concerns.
Health Tips
As we prepare to go back to school in a few weeks, if all goes well, it is important that you continue to work with the children about safety—wearing of masks, practicing social distance, and frequent washing of hands.
OTHER UPDATES
- A concerted effort is being made to ensure that our buildings are safe. We have the Department of Public Health, City of New Haven Department of Public Health, and the Office of Policy Management from the State, assisting in ensuring that the schools’ air quality and HVAC systems are up to par. We have also retained a company to analyze all buildings.
- It is Hispanic Heritage Month. Please share with, or have your students who can research what this is for our families. It is important to recognize and celebrate each other’s culture.
- Bus cards were already distributed.
- Given the delay in opening, some families may have changed their minds regarding the opting in or out options for school, so we are going to send another survey to get the definite updates.
Again, thank you for your support during these times, and let’s continue to work together to support our children.
In service,
Iline P. Tracey
