Internet Public Library & Internet Public Library Ready Reference

  • The Internet Public Library is just like a real library, except it is on the Internet.  The links on the IPL are chosen by real librarians for their accuracy and reliability. The Ready Reference section includes links to almanacs, biographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias and much more!

  • Refdesk.com is billed as ¡°the single best source for facts¡±.  It is a great starting point for finding information quickly.

InfoPlease Almanac

  •  InfoPlease is a great online almanac.  Check out the link to Fact Monster, a kid¡¯s almanac .

Answers.com

  • Answers.com is better than a general search engine.  It provides definitions and explanations from credible sources on over one million topics from its database of over 100 encyclopedias, dictionaries, glossaries and atlases.

Encarta   

  • Encarta is a full-text online encyclopedia.

BritannicaOnlineSchool Edition

  •  This subscription website is available to all New HavenPublic School students.It has access to three different reading levels of Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as multimedia and the best of the web.There is even a Spanish version encyclopedia.See Mrs. Hart for the user ID and password.

Columbia Encyclopedia

  • The Columbia Encyclopedia contains 51,000 short entries.  From this site, you can also search hundreds of other reference books, quotations, and much more!

Wikipedia

  • Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit (be very careful!).  There are over a million articles on a wide variety of subjects.  This encyclopedia is available in several different languages.

Databases

Connecticut Digital Library

  • The Connecticut Digital Library contains links to magazines, newspapers, biographies, history resources and much more. You can connect to it directly from school.  It is available from your home computer if you enter the barcode number from your public library card.

Search Directories and Search Engines

Yahoo and Yahooligans

  • Yahoo and Yahooligans are examples of search directories, where you can click on categories to find the information you need. When you use a search directory, you are only searching the sites included in that directory¡¯s database.

Google

  • Google is a true search engine that searches the entire World Wide Web. You need to enter search terms to find the information you need.  The more specific you are in choosing your search terms, the more successful you will be in locating appropriate sources.  Learn how to use the Advanced Search features.
