The Caldecott Medal

  • The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

The Newbery Medal

  • The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Pura Belpre Award

  • The Pura Belpr¨¦ Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

The Connecticut Nutmeg Book Award

  • The Connecticut Nutmeg Book Awards are determined by students who read and vote for their favorite book from a list of ten nominees every year.  There are lists for both students in grades 4-6 and in grades 7-8.  This webpage also has links to past winners.

Guys Read

  • Guys Read is a website devoted to the particular reading tastes of guys of all ages.  It is maintained by Jon Scieszka, creator of "The Stinky Cheese Man" and other wacky books. 

Notable Trade Books for Young People:  Social Studies

  • The books that appear in these annotated book lists were evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee appointed by National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC).

Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students

  • The books that appear in these lists were selected as outstanding children's science trade books. They were selected by a book review panel appointed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC).
