NEW HAVEN –  The Dixwell Children’s Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th.  The two day event will be held at the “Q” House Plaza, located at 197 Dixwell Ave in New Haven.  At this festival, children will have the chance to learn about career paths in areas of the arts like video game design, sculpture, culinary arts, architecture, and many more.  On the first day of the festival, classes will be given by skilled professionals from 9a.m. to 6p.m. followed by presentations on the second day from 12p.m. to 6p.m.
The goal of this festival is to expose and provide opportunities to students through the arts for continuing education.  At the event, there will be a great variety of demonstrations and workshops being led by experts of the field.  Malene Barnett, a carpet, rugs, and surface designer who has sold to Martha Stewart and Nicole Miller, will be teaching students how to design and make carpets.  She will also select one student's design to be made into a carpet sample.  Ed Cherry, architect and designer of “Q” House and other buildings, will teach students drafting and CAD operations and Linda Vauters a sculptress will teach children how to sculpt with recycled materials.
Registration will begin at 9a.m. on August 15th and space is limited so please get there early.  Admission is free and open to all students in grades K-12, however students under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  If you are interested in helping out with the event, organizers are in need of teen leaders, volunteers, sponsors, and donations.  For more information on the event or how you can help, please contact the Chairperson of the festival, Deborah McDuff Williams, via email at dixwellchildrensartsfestival@gmail.com or by phone at (562) 233-7686.
