NHPS Celebrations as of 2/19/2016

·         Alternative Graduation: On January 22nd New Light High School held its first quarterly graduation ceremony where seven students were able to achieve success through earning their high school diploma. New Light partners with the Youth Stat program and Career Pathways TECH Collaborative, to ensure our students succeed in college, career, and life.  To read the Register coverage, click here.
 
·         Technology Grant: New Haven is one of 171 districts to receive half a million dollars in technology grants from the State Department of Education. The grant was allocated in efforts to improve the technological resources offered to students preparing for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium’ computer-based tests. ·         First Generation: Our seniors had the chance to convene at Southern CT State University and view the First Generation film.  The students were welcomed and encouraged by the College Summit trained peer leaders.  This opportunity was sponsored by New Haven Promise, Wells Fargo and Southern.  Our New Haven Public Schools lead counselor, Chaka Felder led the students in taking a pledge to take all possible steps to go to college. ·         Fair Haven Snow Ball: In efforts to promote New Haven Promise and motivate the students of Fair Haven to continue their education and become lifelong learners, the Physical Education Department taught a dance unit performed with the fight song of represented colleges and universities. Popular songs were chosen to reflect just how pumped our students are to make great strides in their education. To read the Independent article, click here.
 
·         February: “I Rise” Student of the Month –Jayline Gomez is an 8th grade student at John C. Daniels School of International Communication. Jayline has been a part of the John C. Daniels Dual Language program since preschool and is literate in both Spanish and English. Jayline is driven to always do her best and challenge herself to do more. By doing so she has received high honors from 7th through 8th grade.  As 8th grade class president she upholds the mission of her school which encourages students to become well-rounded, global thinkers through exposure to various languages, cultures, and beliefs. ·         Future Innovator: Chase Kinzley from Hillhouse IDEA Academy is being featured in Disney's Dreamer Academy. Kinzley hopes to combine his interests in art and neuroscience and take entrepreneurship classes in college. He dreams of opening art spaces for teenagers to express themselves as an alternative to violence.

·         CIAC Championship Win: The Hillhouse Boys Indoor Track team advance to the State Title bringing home the CIAC Class M Championship with a score of 90 points. The team placed first in the 4x400 meter relay, 300 meter dash, long jump, and high jump. Second in the 4x200 meter relay, 55 meter dash, and third in the 600 meter run.
