New Haven Public Schools Celebrations

  • Partnering with Elm City Communities – Elm City Communities, the city’s Housing Authority, and New Haven Public Schools forged a new partnership that will allow sharing of important student data, including attendance records, academic records, and disciplinary status, all with the goal of supporting students on the path to a positive future.   • Redesign of Alternative Schools- The mayor, city officials, superintendent of schools, administrators, and parents took a field trip to New York City on Tuesday to learn about alternative schools that are having a positive impact on student outcomes. The purpose of the visit was to inform district efforts to redesign our alternative school system and view models of alternative educational settings that positively engage students who may face challenges.   •  Earth Day- Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro visited Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School on Tuesday to help 2nd graders plant begonias for the spring in honor of Earth Day. The students shared the importance of rich soil and how plants help clean the air. DeLauro was impressed with the abundance of eager students raising their hands to answer questions on endangered species, and to learn of the Atlantic salmon being raised in-house.   •   News 8 Everyday MVP- Jaylin Armfield, student at King Robinson Magnet School, received an assignment to do a project that helps the community. She loves fashion, and with the assistance of teachers, she found an organization called “Little Dresses for Africa”. Jaylin applied her passion and decided to turn pillow cases into beautiful dresses to help clothe orphans in Africa with the help of some friends. At the end of the school year, the dresses will be shipped out to the Little Dresses organization to support needy young girls in Africa. Watch the video to see some of Jaylin’s dresses.


  • Coach of the Year- John Acquavita, Head Coach of Wilbur Cross High School, has received the 2015 Coach of the Year Award for being the football coach with the most wins in New Haven Public Schools history. Longtime teacher/coach, John has an extensive history with New Haven Public Schools Athletics serving as assistant coach at James Hillhouse High School, head coach at Hyde School of Health Sciences and Sports Medicine winning three Class S State Championships in 2000, 2004 & 2005, and currently head football coach at Wilbur Cross High School for seven seasons. John will be recognized at the 51st Annual Coaches Recognition Dinner on May 14th at The Aqua Turf Club. For more information, click here
