New Haven Independent features increases in early grade literacy with Google Docs

Some teachers of kindergarten through second grade are using Google Documents spreadsheets to keep a live record of student monthly reading tracks. This new system is helping teachers’ input, store, and access data easier allowing more focus on the students and increased progress updates for parents. This is one proven method used to help the district meet the expectation of having students read out of first grade, and meet Mayor Toni Harps challenge to make New Haven “The City that Reads”. Principal Sabrina Breland of Wexler-Grant School saw an increased the number of students reading at grade level with the implementation of the Google Docs tracking system.
