School and city volunteers visit families to talk about attendance

Mayor Toni N. Harp and Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries joined partners from the Police and Fire departments, school system and community to engage in a second door-to-door canvass of New Haven neighborhoods to talk to families of at-risk youth Tuesday evening. This canvass targeted families of middle school students living in the Fair Haven and Hill neighborhoods and the goal of the canvass was to raise awareness in our communities about the importance of daily school attendance.
Tuesday’s canvass is the second community canvass in recent weeks prompted by a desire to step up engagement of students at risk for falling off track for high school graduation or getting into serious trouble. The first canvass focused talking to families about ways to reduce gun violence and keep young people safe and it came on the heels of two shootings that took the lives of young men in the New Haven community.
