COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY OFFERS FREE APPLICATION HELP TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS SEEKING COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID

Nation-wide event encourages college readiness and accessibility for all high school seniors

NEW HAVEN – College-bound high school seniors in New Haven Public Schools are encouraged to attend College Goal Sunday, a free event to help students and their families fill out the FAFSA, a federal form that is required of all financial aid applicants at colleges and universities.

All events throughout the state run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2014. New Haven’s College Goal Sunday will be hosted at Gateway Community College, 20 Church St., in downtown New Haven. Register online here and find out what information to bring to the event here.

Everyone seeking financial assistance for college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Financial aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier students and families send in their application, the more likely it is that they will receive scholarships and grants to pay for college without accruing debt through student loans. Students who submit the FAFSA too late could lose out on critical financial aid.

At College Goal Sunday, students and families receive help from knowledgeable volunteers in filling out the FAFSA, as well as general information regarding state and federal financial aid programs. Additionally, there will be a raffle for a $200 scholarship.

Partners on the event include New Haven Public Schools, New Haven Promise, College Summit, Gateway Community College, the Connecticut Association of Educational Opportunity Programs, Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators, USA Funds and the Lumina Foundation.
