NHPS TO OFFER FREE MEAL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS THIS SUMMER

Services include state-sponsored breakfast and lunch program, as well as highly touted district food truck, under direction of new Food Services Director

The New Haven Public Schools district is offering two free meals programs this summer to local residents under the supervision of new Food Services Executive Director Gail Sharry. The Seamless Summer Food Program, sponsored by the State of Connecticut, provides free breakfast and lunch to children and teens ages 18 and under at various sites throughout the city, including public and charter schools, community centers, churches, and even parks and playgrounds.

In addition to the state-sponsored meals program, the district is also running its food truck, which is in its third summer of operation. The truck provides nutritious lunch and dinner options five days a week for children and teens ages 18 and under. Parents and guardians are welcome during lunch after August 1, as well. The truck will make its stops largely in parks and public areas. Healthy menu highlights include yogurt, whole grain breads, low-fat or skim milk, and fresh fruits vegetables, in addition to lean entrees.

“It’s important that we continue to put kids first throughout the summer by ensuring that no child goes hungry in our community,” said Sharry.

The food truck will be operating from June 26 through August 23 while the Seamless Summer Food Program runs July 1 through August 2. Both programs will be closed for the 4th of July holiday.
