CANZANELLA NAMED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

JOSEPH CANZANELLA NAMED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR BY CT HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION
 
 
New Haven Public Schools Athletics Director Joseph Canzanella was named Athletic Director of the Year for 2012-13 by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. He will be honored for the achievement this evening at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
 
“Joe Canzanella is a hard-working and dedicated educator who has taken the New Haven Public Schools athletics program to a higher level,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo. “He is both a role model to our young people and a leader who has earned statewide respect for our sports teams. I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
 
Canzanella oversees physical education and athletic programs for 47 schools in the district. A lifelong resident of New Haven, Canzanella graduated from James Hillhouse High School and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as his 6th year certificate from Southern Connecticut State University. He is pursuing an advanced degree in sports management.
 
“I am honored and humbled to win this award and I'd like to dedicate it to the hundreds of passionate, hard-working students who push themselves to excel on the field and in the classroom,” Canzanella said. “It has been a pleasure working with so many talented student athletes in schools across New Haven.”
 
During his time with New Haven Public Schools, Canzanella has worked as a physical education teacher, coach, principal and athletics director. He coached football at Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross high schools for 10 years as well as soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball at various schools. Canzanella created New Haven’s first Unified Sports Program in 1990. He has served as athletic director for the district since 1999.
 
Canzanella has officiated boys’ and girls’ basketball for 31 seasons, including 24 years in the CIAC State Basketball Tournament and 11 CIAC State High School Championships. He also has officiated basketball and softball at the college level, including league tournaments, the NCAA Division 1, 2 and 3 regional tournaments and the Division 3 World Series.
