In addition to more forums, the Board of Education announced an expanded community and parent outreach plan. This week, all schools in the district are sending home letters to families with information about the public forums as well as a superintendent search survey, which they can fill out and return to their child’s schools. Paper surveys will also be available at city libraries and various organizations and service agencies around town. There are links to the surveys in English and Spanish on the district website, Additionally, the board is working to create a schedule of focus group meetings to engage community stakeholders.
Automated phone messages will be sent to all parents notifying them of the new schedule. Flyers will be circulated in the community and through e-mail and social media to ensure fuller community engagement. We are asking for the media’s help in publicizing the forums as well.
“This is a very important time for New Haven and we want to make sure parents and the community have a voice in the search for a new superintendent,” said Board of Education President Dr. Carlos Torre. “We appreciate the valuable input from parents who came out to this week’s forums and we look forward to hearing more feedback in the coming weeks. Parent and community engagement is critical to the success of this superintendent search and to continuing the momentum of School Change. Please come out and have your voice be heard.”
With Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo set to retire at the end of the school year, the Board of Education is conducting a national search to find a replacement. The board hired a firm – Proact Search – to oversee the process. Parents and community members are strongly encouraged to participate in the process.
Here is how it works:
·         Parent, community and NHPS staff input will be gathered at public forums and a series of focus groups.
·         Parent, community and staff input will be collected through online & paper surveys.
·         Search firm – Proact Search – will put together an overview of what people want to see in the next superintendent.
·         Position profile will be developed using this public input and will be posted locally and nationally.
·         Interviews will be conducted to assess candidates, and finalists will participate in an additional engagement process with community representatives.
·         Final candidate selected to serve as next superintendent of schools!
