Dr. Ben Carson Visits Strong School to Open Reading Room!

Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson visited Strong School Friday to celebrate the opening of the Ben Carson Reading Room at the school. Ben Carson Reading Rooms are designed to promote independent leisure reading and to combat illiteracy.  Dr. Ben Carson credits reading as being the catalyst to his success and hopes to share this message with students.
Dr. Carson also visited Hill Regional Career High School to attend the Carson Scholars Fund annual New Haven Awards Ceremony to honor the 2013 new Haven Carson Scholars. This year’s scholars are:
Imani Manick-Highsmith - Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School
Tanvi Patel - Hill Regional Career High School
Reilly Stevens - Common Ground High School
Araceli Tello - Columbus Family Academy
Gabrielle Torres-Knotts - Wexler-Grant School
The Carson Scholars Fund is a nonprofit organization founded by world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy.  The Carson Scholars Fund operates under an educational mission.
“Strong Elementary School is very excited and honored to have the first Ben Carson Reading Room in Connecticut,” said Principal Susan DeNicola. “The Reading Room will allow every student to have a comfortable and inviting place to relax and embrace reading.  The students will have the opportunity to read a variety of books and take them on a journey to places they have never imagined. At Strong School, we believe that if our students ‘Think Big’ like Dr. Carson did, that they too can achieve anything they put their minds to.”
Each year, the Carson Scholars Fund recognizes and rewards students in grades 4 – 11 who have earned the highest level of academic achievement and display strong humanitarian qualities with $1,000 college scholarship awards.  This year, eight students from New Haven and the surrounding area have been named Carson Scholars, joining the ranks of 425 talented students from across the country.  In addition, 715 students including five from New Haven have renewed their Carson Scholar status.  These previous winners have maintained high academic standards and a strong commitment to their communities and are being recognized for their continued achievements.
To date, the Carson Scholars Fund has awarded over 5,600 college scholarships and has scholars in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The New Haven Awards Ceremony is one of nine regional ceremonies being held across the country and is sponsored in part by Yale University.  The awards ceremonies are one of the most important components of the scholarship program as it honors these high achieving students in the presence of their families, educators, school administrators, and community.  World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times best selling author Dr. Ben Carson will attend both ceremonies.  In a society that values the superficial, the Carson Scholars Fund is placing the emphasis on education by rewarding successful academics and good citizenship.
The Carson Scholars Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 1994 by Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy.  The Carson Scholars Fund is dedicated to impacting the nation in a positive way by cultivating future leaders who are academically talented and socially conscious.
