Parent University offers free workshops to help parents support their kids in school and learn the skills they need to get a better job and take their family in a positive direction
Parent University New Haven, a new initiative that aims to help parents to be strong, positive forces in their children’s education, will hold its second citywide day of workshops on April 6 at Gateway Community College. The April 6 session will also feature an on-site College Fair.
New Haven Public School parents are invited to participate in the day, which will include four sessions of workshops that cover a variety of academic, behavioral and life enrichment topics. Workshops include: Planning for college, how to help your child study for exams, how to support teenagers, navigating the public school system, reading with your child and fun ways to teach math. Non-academic support workshops focus on topics like: Stress management, how to protect their children from bullying, healthy eating on a budget, and raising children in an urban environment.
New Haven’s Parent University is unique in that workshops not only address how parents can support their kids in school, but also how they can enrich their own lives. Topics include tips for successful job searching, resume writing and starting your own business.
Parent University New Haven is free to NHPS parents and includes free lunch and free child care with pre-registration for children ages 3 to 12. The free child care and youth program includes workshops sponsored by the Peabody Museum, Eli Whitney Museum, New Haven Free Public Library, Arte Inc., Hispanic Health Council, New Haven Parks and Recreation Department and others.
Parent University goes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held at Gateway’s new downtown campus, 20 Church St. There will be free parking at the Temple Street garage and free bus transportation from various locations throughout the city. For more information, go to
