In the next step of the NHPS kindergarten admission process, students newly enrolling in Kindergarten will be accepted into schools with admission zones tomorrow.  This step repeats the process conducted last year, and continues the pattern of strengthening and clarifying the admission of students to the New Haven Public Schools.
“We look forward to welcoming these youngsters to the New Haven Public Schools for Kindergarten,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo.  “We continue to see strong interest in our schools, and we are committed to ensuring a quality education in each of our schools.”
The students admitted to kindergarten tomorrow will be those who are newly enrolling in New Haven Public Schools, who have signed up since May 1st according to the published process (, and who are eligible for one of the neighborhood schools where admission is governed by an attendance zone.  To be admitted, students must live in the attendance zone for the school and be the appropriate age.  This process of using an open enrollment period was first used last year, and has successfully eliminated the “first-come first-served” admission standard used in previous years.  Rollover registration allowed students enrolled in sponsored Pre-Kindergarten programs to be admitted in May.
For the admission day tomorrow, six schools have fewer applicants from the attendance zone than there are seats available in the school – all students will be accepted.  Five schools have more applicants than seats, including Bishop Woods School, Nathan Hale School, Truman School, Worthington Hooker School, and Fair Haven School.  For these schools, a random lottery will select students for admission, and will order students on a waitlist of each school.  The seats available in any school are based on the physical plant, the number of pre-kindergarten students accepted, and any retentions that may be necessary in this year’s Kindergarten class.  Note that Worthington Hooker School already has a waitlist, based on the roll-over of students in sponsored Pre-K classes, and Fair Haven School is holding kindergarten seats aside in order to accommodate the new arrival center at the school.
Students placed on the wait list will be registered for another Kindergarten program, and will be called from the waitlist as seats are available.  Students will be released from the waiting list periodically through the summer and fall; those students called from the waitlist will receive a phone call and a letter from the Registration office.  Families called from the waitlist have 5 business days from their phone call to claim the seat, before it is offered to another family.  Historically, there has been movement from the waitlists through the summer and early fall, and the district anticipates similar movement from waitlists this year.
Families will be notified by mail of their admission in early July.  Families are welcome to attend the lottery, which will be held at 10:00 am in the 2nd floor Board Room at 54 Meadow, and can also visit the Registration Office with appropriate identification anytime after June 19th for confirmation of their placement.
Families registering for Kindergarten from this point on will be placed in their attendance zone school only if there is space available.  If there is not space in the attendance zone school, the student will be enrolled in the Strong Early Childhood Center or another appropriate NHPS kindergarten program, and the student will be added to the waiting list for the neighborhood school by completing the Neighborhood Kindergarten Lottery form.
