New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) preschoolers must receive flu vaccines by January 1 or they will not be allowed to return to pre-kindergarten programs after Christmas break.
A state regulation requires all preschoolers to be vaccinated against the flu by January 1.
Parents are asked to provide proof of their child’s flu immunization to the school nurse by December 23.
The district informed parents of the requirement earlier this year when they registered their child for preschool. A reminder letter was sent to parents last week.
If their child has not been immunized, parents are urged to contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible. Children receiving the vaccine for the first time need two shots one month apart to be fully immunized.
If a child has received a flu vaccine in previous years, the child must receive at least one shot to return to prekindergarten on January 3.
If a child has never received a flu vaccine, the child must receive two shots or the first shot in December to return to pre-kindergarten on January 3. The child must then complete the immunization course to remain in preschool.
The New Haven Health Department will provide free flu shots by appointment to uninsured, Medicaid eligible or Native American preschoolers from 9 to 11 a.m. every Thursday starting December 1st. The shots will be administered at the department’s clinic on the first floor of 54 Meadow Street, New Haven.
