HIGH SCHOOL IN THE COMMUNITY HEAD COOK TO COMPETE ON FOOD NETWORK’S “CHOPPED” PROGRAM

Cheryl Barbara, the head cook at High School in the Community, will compete on the next episode of the Food Network competition show Chopped.

The episode is scheduled to air at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22.

In Chopped, four contestants compete for $10,000. They are given baskets of mystery ingredients and must create an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Judges taste the contestants’ creations and eliminate or “chop” a contestant after each course.

“Stereotypes of lunch ladies are with the hair net serving slop,” Barbara told Food Network. “That’s so not it. Us lunch ladies take care of our kids. I have an 11-year-old daughter . . . and 300 other children.”

Barbara has helped implement the district’s landmark lunch program under Executive Director of Food Services Chef Tim Cipriano. Under Cipriano, the New Haven Public Schools serve fresh, locally grown foods whenever possible and have greatly increased servings of fruits and vegetables.
