NEW HAVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS CANCEL TUESDAY PARENT ORIENTATIONS, TEACHER IN-SERVICE

The New Haven Public Schools’ (NHPS)  orientations and teachers-only school day scheduled for Tuesday are canceled because of Hurricane Irene.

Administrators as well as custodial, trade and central office staff are to report to work Tuesday.

The district will decide on a day-to-day basis whether to go forward with new school year events. The system will update parents, teachers and staff via daily recorded Parentlink messages to their home phones. They can also check the district’s website as well as online news sites, television and radio for the latest information.

“We are canceling orientations and teacher-only day scheduled for Tuesday because of continuing power outages at some city schools,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo said. “We will decide on a day-to-day basis how to proceed. Our goal is as little disruption to the start of the school year as possible.

“The district is working closely with United Illuminating to restore power to all city schools.”

As of Monday, 12 city schools had no power: Hillhouse High School; Sound School; Barnard School; Beecher School; New Horizons; MicroSociety School; King-Robinson School; Wexler-Grant School; Lincoln-Bassett School; Davis Street School and two temporary buildings being used by Hill Central School.
