NEW HAVEN — The city whet its tennis appetite Tuesday with the unveiling of the newly refurbished courts at Wilbur Cross High School.

The main course comes later this week: Thursday’s kickoff of the New Haven Open at Yale, the professional tennis tournament presented by First Niagara bank. But first, city leaders got together with U.S. Tennis Association and New Haven Open organizers to celebrate the new courts.

The refurbished courts are courtesy of the USTA’s Olympus U.S. Open Series Legacy Program, which seeks to leave a positive impact on the communities that serve as tournament hosts.

“This legacy that they are giving to all of us is just another testament to how the tournament uses this large-scale international sporting event to benefit the city of New Haven and its residents,” said Anne Worcester, director of the New Haven Open at Yale.
