NHPS AND WYBC HOST BACK TO SCHOOL RALLY FEATURING FOOD, FUN, FREE BACKPACKS, PROMISE PLEDGE SIGNING AND INFO FOR PARENTS

The New Haven Public Schools and WYBC radio are teaming up for a Back to School Rally tomorrow featuring fun, food and free school stuff for kids as well as a New Haven Promise pledge signing and information for parents.

The rally will be from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the New Haven Athletic Center at James Hillhouse High School, 480 Sherman Parkway. The district and co-sponsor WYBC will give out free backpacks and school materials while supplies last.

The event will include food, bounce houses, games, basketball and other fun activities. For parents, there will be information on afterschool activities, social services and the New Haven Promise college scholarship program.

Incoming freshmen and their parents will be asked to sign the New Haven Promise pledge, a commitment to meet the program’s requirements for a college scholarship. New Haven Promise, a joint program of the Yale University and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, provides scholarships to city residents who graduate with at least a 3.0 grade point average and fulfill other requirements.

“I want to thank WYBC and others for their generosity, helping us hold the district’s annual Back to School Rally,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo said. “This event gets students and staff excited and looking forward to the new school year. Kids get a chance to have fun with a reminder that school is just around the corner. Parents receive important information on afterschool activities, social services and the New Haven Promise scholarship program. Best of all, everyone has a good time.

“I’m excited by New Haven Promise’s participation in the rally. I urge students and parents to take this opportunity to sign the Promise Pledge, committing to meet the requirements for New Haven Promise colleges scholarships.

“I am looking forward to the upcoming school year, the second of our School Change reforms. I am confident that the district will build on School Change’s first year successes, including improved test scores and school learning environments.”

The Promise Pledge signing will be at 11 a.m.; students and parents should arrive in advance. Students and parents who sign the pledge will be entered into a raffle for a new backpack and HP® netbook. The drawing will be later that day. Students must be present to win.

Also sponsoring the rally is the New Haven Federation of Teachers; the School Administrators Association; AFB Facilities Management; and First Student.
