ORANGE — This is no ordinary field trip to a farm.

The students who visited Shamrock Farm on Lambert Road in Orange on Tuesday saw the same sheep and chickens and tasted the same corn and watermelon as everyone else. But throughout the trip, the students had one rule to follow: no speaking English.

The students are part of the New Haven public school system’s language immersion program, a grant-funded collaboration with Yale University that teaches kids Arabic and Mandarin Chinese.
