HILLHOUSE INVITING CLASS OF 1951 TO JUNE 1 CEREMONY HONORING CLASSMATE FOR $1 MILLION DONATION

James Hillhouse High School is inviting members of the Class of 1951 to attend a June 1 ceremony naming its science wing after classmate Dr. Eugene Pergament in recognition of his $1 million donation for college scholarships to Hillhouse students.

“I strongly encourage members of the Hillhouse Class of 1951 to join their classmate Dr. Pergament at the June 1 dedication,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo said. “Dr. Pergament would love to see you there. I hope as many of Dr. Pergament’s classmates attend as possible.

“We are so grateful for Dr. Pergament’s generous gift enabling Hillhouse students to pursue their dreams. College is vital to our students and the city’s future. Dr. Pergament’s scholarships help Hillhouse graduates further their education so they can better themselves, their families and their community. I’m pleased that we are honoring Dr. Pergament by naming Hillhouse’s science wing after him.”

Dr. Pergament’s donation provides $10,000 scholarships to 10 Hillhouse graduates each year for a decade. This is the second year of the program.

Dr. Pergament is an obstetrician specializing in genetic screening and testing for high risk pregnancies. He is also a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill., where he has served as a reproductive geneticist for the past 24 years.

After graduating from Hillhouse in 1951, Dr. Pergament attended Yale University, receiving his degree in 1955. He eventually earned a doctorate in genetics from Purdue University and in 1970 received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Medical School.

Dr. Pergament was a principal investigator in the development and introduction of first trimester screening for Down syndrome, research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Classmates of Dr. Pergament who want to attend the June 1 event are asked to RSVP with Hillhouse Assistant Principal Shirley Joyner by phone, (203) 497-7529, or by email, shirley.joyner@new-haven.k12.ct.us.
