HILLHOUSE FOOTBALL PLAYERS ATTEND OPEN HOUSE OF HOMES THEY HELPED REHAB

Members of the state champion James Hillhouse High School football team today attended an open house at two Winchester Avenue homes they helped rehabilitate.

The houses were dilapidated when United Way of Greater New Haven and Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven decided to fix them up. In the summer of 2009, more than 40 Hillhouse High School football players volunteered to help gut the structures’ interiors.

Team members today toured the end result of their hard work, fully restored homes ready for sale.

“These students are champions off the field as well as on,” Hillhouse Principal Kermit Carolina said. “I’m proud that they donated their time to help their community. Thanks in part to their hard work, families will have new homes. These student-athletes set a shining example by giving back.”

Hillhouse won the state Class M football championship last year.
