New Haven Board of Education Elects New President
NEW HAVEN - The New Haven Board of Education, today, elected Dr. Carlos Antonio Torre, Professor of Education at Southern Connecticut State University, as the new board President. Torre is moving into his new role during the first steps of implementation of the most important school reform initiative the district has ever experienced. The new initiative intends to move New Haven Schools from incremental to exponential improvement narrowing the achievement gap, slashing the dropout rate, dramatically increasing the graduation and college matriculation rate and ensuring that every child has the preparation and resources to succeed.
"Dr. Torre will play a significant role as President in moving the district forward to a new standard of excellence and achievement through our school reform initiative," said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. "Dr. Torre understands the importance of his position on the board and the challenges ahead. He is ready to help take us to the next level."
"Dr. Torre brings valuable experienced in the field of education and has continued to show excellent leadership skills throughout his time on our board.  We look forward to his thoughtful direction as we move our school district to the highest heights for our students, “said Dr. Reginald Mayo, Superintendent of Schools.
"I am aware of the challenges ahead as we strive to provide the best educational opportunities possible for our students.  As board president, I am committed to working with fellow Board members so that together we can explore any and every resource that helps us improve the education we offer our children," said Dr. Torre.  "I am honored to assume this position because, as a Board, we are ready, willing, and able to do the work necessary to achieve our goal of transforming our schools from very good to Great".
Torre replaces interim president Richard Abbatiello whose term has ended.  Abbatiello stepped in as President after Dr. Brian K. Perkins resigned in early July.
Torre, a twelve year member of the New Haven Board of Education, earned three degrees from Harvard: a Doctorate of Education, a Masters in Human Development and a Certificate of Advance Studies in Administration, Planning and Social Policy. Torre previously served as Board President from 1997 to 2003 and has been a member of the board since 1994. Torre is a also a Fellow at Yale University, where he served for seven years as Assistant Dean of the College and a member of the Psychology faculty. Dr. Torre is an elected member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Puerto Rico and was awarded the Academy's Medal of the Academician. Dr. Torre has been involved with the Board of Education most recently as the Chairperson for the Curriculum Committee.
The other members of the Board are: Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., Elizabeth Torres, Michael R. Nast, Dr. M. Ann Levett, and Susan R. Samuels.
