Book of the Month

The Book of the Month is sponsored by the New Haven Bar Association. The books are selected to support the theme of the month. The theme for January is Tolerance. Ms. Martens has prepared activity booklets for all grade levels that coincide with the month’s theme.

Advisory

All grade 7 and grade 8 students participate in the Advisory Program. The advisory groups meet with their advisor one a month to discuss current social issues, brainstorm ways to help maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, and plan activities to keep school spirit high. They recently did a fabulous job with the planning and orchestration of WINTER WONDERLAND. It was a great success and the pre-school through grade 4 students enjoyed all of the crafts and activities that the Advisory had prepared for them.

Book Bowl

Our Book Bowl Team qualified for the Final Four!!! They competed against other New Haven school teams and they will go to the “Final Four” to compete on Friday, January 11. They worked hard, read 10 books and we are excited for them. We wish them luck.

Book Bowl Club

Students train for the Book Bowl to compete on the school wide and interdistrict level.

Sea of Reading

Many students are participating in the Sea of Reading project. Notice the bulletin board in the main hallway. Students read each night for 15 minutes. Parents record students’ reading of the Sea of Reading log. After 10 hours of reading they get a fish named after them in the sea of reading.

JCL Reading Tutors

The Jewish Coalition on Literacy has provided us with more than 20 tutors who come to school faithfully to read with our students. The students enjoy the extra attention and they have a rich literary experience with these dedicated volunteers.

Book Buddies

Mr. Shevchenko leads the buddy reading project with grade 7 and grade 8 students and our own kindergarten, first and second grade students. The other students borrow books from the library to read to their younger buddies. The older students enjoy re reading books to the little ones that they enjoyed as small children. The younger students often ask to read to their older buddy!

The Writing is on the Wall

Teachers showcase samples of their students’ writing on the first large bulletin board on the right of the main hallway. The teachers change the display often, so there is always something new from our talented students. Please take a few minutes to peruse the students’ work. We are very proud of their accomplishments.

Student Council

We have an active and enthusiastic Student Council at Nathan Hale. They are led by Mrs. Carder and they plan many school spirit activities to help make our school days even more enjoyable. They are sponsoring a pajama and movie day for grade 7 and 8 students this month, a school wide pajama day in March, a spirit day in April, and they will also coordinate valentine messages on February 13 th.

Mrs. Carder is leading the after school tutoring project. She has teamed 7th and 8 th grade students with younger students. The project is proving to be successful. The groups meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

Rockin Readers

The Rockin’ Readers is a school-wide reading initiative led by Ms. Martens, our library media specialist. The goal of Rockin’ Readers is to increase students’ recreational reading at home. A project idea is suggested each month to encourage students’ creative response to literature. Project work is due the first Monday of each month.
