Library Media Aides
PLEASE REMEMBER YOU ARE IMPORTANT. The library staff depends heavily on the student aides. The library could not operate successfully without you. You are a very valuable part of the workings of High School in the Community.
Daily Shelf Maintenance
It is important that the shelves be kept neat and attractive. There is nothing more uninviting to students than messy books. When a book leans for a long period of time it can get out of shape and can sustain permanent damage. Each day every section of the library should receive some neatening. That neatening should consist of:
- throwing away any papers or trash that might have been left on the shelf,
- pushing the books so that they stand tightly against each other,
- putting multiple volume sets in the right order,
- checking that no books got squeezed behind the others. In addition,
- shelving any books left lying at the end of the shelf.
The following schedule will be in effect for straightening:
A period aides will look after fiction, the short story collection and the video room.
B1 aides will straighten Reference.
B2 aides will neaten non-fiction from 000-501.
C period aides will look after biography and the college catalogue section.
D period aides will be responsible for 502 to 999 in non-fiction.
This is part of your daily duties as student library aides.
Circulation Desk Procedures
There are generally three library aides per period. One aide should be at the circulation computer at all times. The other two will perform the daily duties. This will be up to the three aides to decide each day who will do what.
Everyone who enters the library media center should be asked to sign in. They must have a pass and indicate who it is from and the purpose of it. They should leave their pass with Stephanie or the library aide.
There is NO personal phone use. That also applies to library aides. Once you have completed the tasks of the day and any others that may be assigned to you, you may use the remaining time to do homework or read. The computers at the desk are your school needs. The same rules apply to them as they do to the rest of the computers in the library. Absolutely no playing computer games during the school day.
B1 aides are expected to participate fully in SSR. That means reading a novel for pleasure. Since each aide is expected to pass at least two Accelerated Reader quizzes during the course of the term, it is advised that aides choose books that are part of that program.
Serving as a library aide is a privilege at High School in the Community, not a right. It is at the discretion of the library staff. You are expected to set a good example for the other students by following the rules of the library. Do not eat in the library. Do not print out materials that are not school related. Accept tasks gracefully and finish them in a timely manner.
Grading
Keep in mind that this is a graded course. Your grade will be based on the following:
1. Mastering circulation desk procedures
2. Completing tasks efficiently
3. Maintaining your section of the library
4. Passing Accelerated Reader quizzes
5. Displaying a friendly and helpful attitude
Shelving videos
Videos are shelved in the back room to the right. They are shelved in the same way as the books. Fiction is first, alphabetical by last name of author. (CHECK THIS)
Biography is alphabetical by the subject's last name.
Please do not just leave the video if there is no room on the shelf where it belongs. Shift the last few videos on that shelf to the beginning of the next one to make room.
Note: Videos should not be desensitized. It is a magnet and will erase the tape. Warn the patron that the video will beep when they take it through the library entrance. Only teachers and staff may check out videos.
