Athletic Tutorial is a support tool for each and every athlete. Our program will assist athletes to maintain and improve grades before, during and after their season in order to achieve overall academic success.

Hillhouse's Best Buddies program matches intellectual disabled students with students from the regular education program. Best Buddies meet with each other once a week, while the entire chapter participates in special activities throughout the school year. Debora Vita, and Don Lynch are the Faculty Advisors. The Book Bowl is a citywide literacy activity sponsored by the Library Media Services Department. This event attempts to utilize all segments of our staff in support of our student team(s). The teams consisting of five members, must read ten books, chosen by a committee of Library Media Specialists. The city championship is held in late May within the Aldermatic Chambers.

| Dramatic Reading Contest
The African -American History Month Dramatic Reading Contest is a joint activity of the History and English Departments organized annually in February to celebrate the literary works of African-American authors. Students are invited to make dramatic presentations of poetry, literature or speeches by Black authors of their own choosing before a panel of judges. First, second and third prizes are awarded .

| The Elm Tree
The Hillhouse Elm Tree is our senior year book. It captures and holds our high school memories and visions. As one of the oldest high school publication in the nation, it is now in its third century of publication. The Elm Tree advisors are Mrs. Daddona, Mrs. Belton, and Mr. DePasqua.

The EXTRA is the official World Language Department Literary Magazine of James Hillhouse High School. It is the vehicle used by foreign language teachers to showcase the best examples of foreign language students’ written compositions, and pictorial representations of themes studied throughout the year. This publication is a collaborative effort of the entire Hillhouse Department of World Languages. Mrs. E. Calderón is the faculty advisor.

The Glean is the literary arts journal of Hillhouse High School. Published annually under various names since 1882, The Gleam contains students' poems, stories, essays, illustrations, and photographs. Mr. Nelkin is the faculty advisor.

| Kitchen Konnection
The "Kitchen Konnection" is a student operated restaurant. All the food is prepared by students from scratch and served formally in the "Kitchen Konnection" dining room. This gives the students the opportunity to experience working in a professional food preparation setting. The "Kitchen Konnection" is open one day a week to serve adults a full meal consisting of soup, salad, entrée, dessert, and beverage.

Junior ROTC’s Mission
Statement is: JROTC is a high school course given during regular school hours, but includes many out-of-classroom activities. We cover the basics in history, government, technology awareness, and current events. We also teach leadership skills (like how to motivate others) and personal skills (how to study, take tests, interview for jobs). Extracurricular activities are also offered. Some of the most popular are Drill teams and Color Guard teams, which get involved in school and local community events. Field trips, summer camps and military balls are also offered. No JROTC cadet is under any obligation to join the military.

The National Honor Society serves to distinguish those students who have shown excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and service. Membership not only recognizes students for their many accomplishments; it encourages them to continue active involvement in school and community projects. To be considered for membership to the NHS, students must meet the organizations academic standards. This includes having a minimum weighted average of 15 quality points and possessing superior conduct and academic grades.

The Southern Connecticut Conference for Diversity Training offers students from New Haven and local area schools the opportunity to participate in monthly activities that foster tolerance and acceptance and celebrates the great diversity that makes all of us special. The focus is "Building bridges and breaking down barriers".

| School-To-Career
School-To-Career (STC) integrates career development concepts, academics, vocational skill building and technology applications to an existing flexible curriculum designed to combine school and work-based learning to produce a more motivated, competent and efficient work force for the 21st century. The Career Center is maintained by three full and one p/t CSO staff. Our vision is to provide quality career/college information and life-long learning skills so that all students can compete in our global society. The Sentinel newspaper is one of Hillhouse’s major school publications. Students who take the Journalism course with Sentinel Advisor Mr. Nelkin work on The Sentinel’s production.

The National Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) is an honor society for students of Spanish in public and private schools in the U.S. and Canada. The Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In order to be inducted into the Society, a nominee must meet the criteria set forth by the National Spanish Honor Society and that of the Oscar Arias Chapter of James Hillhouse H.S. Additionally, to be considered for induction, nominees must be outstanding students of the Spanish language, and of the culture of Spanish speaking people.

The Student Council is a forum which provides opportunities for students voices to be heard; to develop student responsibility, initiative, leadership and school pride; to promote worthy citizenship training and to foster good relations with the community. Student Council officers for 2005-06 are Shanice Little, President; Tanore Barrow, Vice-President; Brittney Kelley, Corresponding Secretary; Aidelle Gaskins, Treasurer; Ebony Moore, Recording Secretary; Shamesha Hall, Sergeant-At-Arms; and Mrs. Linnen is the Faculty Advisor.

| Sweetheart
Ball
The Sweetheart ball is an annual tradition at Hillhouse. Each year the senior class sponsors a semi-formal Valentine’s dance. The theme of the dance varies each year, and the decorations are always elaborate and beautiful. Ms. Belton’s art classes and Mr. Love’s woodworking classes provide the decorations transforming our gymnasium into an exciting and festive setting. This year’s theme was Night of the Dragon. A local DJ plays the latest music. The food is prepared by the senior class advisors and the cost of admission is kept at a low price of $15.00 per person. Because underclassmen may not purchase tickets to the Senior Prom, the Sweetheart Ball provides the only opportunity for all students to participate in a sophisticated and beautiful dance event.

Teacher Prep is a four-year program open to all Hillhouse students. Students not only read about the teaching profession, they also tutor elementary school students, participate in internships, and take courses at Southern Connecticut State University. Five Hillhouse students per year receive full tuition scholarships to SCSU, along with a guarantee of employment from the New Haven School system. Teachers are Ms. Staggers [contact person], Mr. Raccaro, Ms. Blackman, and Mrs. E. Calderón .
