Our Vision
Edgewood Magnet School will provide a safe, stimulating
learning environment where democratic ideals, respect for our diversity, and the sense of
responsibility to ourselves, our community, and our environment form the foundation of our
school. We will commit to providing an education that will allow our students to become
avid life-long learners in our ever-changing technological society.
Our staff will establish and maintain a challenging academic
and social learning program that aspires to meet the needs of all of our students.
Teachers, staff developers, and the Library Media Specialist will collaborate jointly to
plan, implement, and evaluate resource-based learning activities. Thematic, team-taught
units with an emphasis on the children's ability to work and learn collaboratively will be
the basis of our curriculum. These themes will allow students with different learning
styles to learn through hands-on exploration, decision making, and creative writing,
ensuring that students will become life-long learners and creative thinkers. The library
media center will become the interdisciplinary crossroads of the school inspiring and
encouraging ideas as well as providing the resources and tools necessary for these
thematic units and for information literacy. Literacy will be a main focus of our school.
We will implement creative reading incentive programs.
With its arts-infused curriculum, Edgewood Magnet School will
provide many opportunities for a stimulating and challenging learning environment. Our
Higher Order Thinking (H.O.T.) school program will continue to cultivate our students'
ability to think critically and analytically through the highly motivating vehicles of
music, theater, dance and the visual arts. We will cultivate our students' artistic
talents and employ those talents in promoting academic skills. We will recognize the
creativity and contribution of each person through town meetings and through school
publications. Our staff will utilize community resources such as museums, the vital arts
community, and our rich cultural diversity.
Edgewood Magnet School will support the Comer-Zigler model,
bringing the family and school closer together. An after school program will meet the
needs of working parents. Parents will be encouraged to volunteer and will be provided
with the necessary training in order to assist in classrooms, the media center, and with
special events. A section for parent resources will be established in the media center.
The media center will be a place for parents and children to work together using
technology as a tool, to find information they need. The staff will be advocates for
reading-aloud in the home. A CoZi facilitator will plan and implement the programs
designed to enable parents to help their children become lifelong learners.
Edgewood Magnet School will strive for excellence in its
staff, its students, its resources, and its facilities. We will provide an updated
facility through complete renovation of our building. Our parent-staff grants committee
will continue to search for grants to provide resources beyond what our district can
provide. Edgewood Magnet School is student centered, modeling our "Kids First"
philosophy. We believe that all students have the capacity to learn an enriched and
challenging curriculum. Our commitment is to ensure that each student is provided with the
opportunity to fulfill that potential.
