Welcome to East Rock Global Magnet School
Our Mission
East Rock Magnet: A Global Studies School is dedicated to increasing the students’ awareness and knowledge of their world. Its underlying philosophy equips students with information-processing skills of accessing, analyzing and communicating information effectively, which will allow them to succeed in the 21st century. Emphasis is directed towards improving student achievement levels through the infusion of a new interdisciplinary curriculum at all grade levels incorporating a state-of-the-art technology program.

Our Vision
East Rock Global Studies Magnet School recognizes that a Balanced Literacy Based Program is the key to the future success of our students. The philosophy is integrated into the district's curriculum framework, the national standards, and the global studies/technology curriculum of East Rock. It ensures that our students learn the necessary information literacy skills to compete in a global, technological, and information-driven society for the next millennium. Our new technology provides the proper tools for:
Teachers to facilitate learning
Students to learn higher-level thinking skills and communicate ideas
Teachers and students to access, organize and process information; reinforce prior learning; and solve problems more creatively, effectively, and efficiently
The sizable collection of print, audiovisual materials and technology resources, based on the school's global studies curriculum, promotes the success of resource-based teaching/learning, and recreational reading. The Library Media Center serves as an extension of the classroom, and is the educational hub of the school. Furthermore, the library contains a Technology Media Center and a Teacher Resource Area. These added resources enhance and optimize the staff’s professional development on an ongoing basis. This unique arrangement provides a utopia for the perfect educational setting.
In addition, our students, staff members, parents, and members of the community have access to our state-of-the-art technology, which includes the automation of the Library Media Center, school-wide accessible networking (WAN), and our abundant and diverse collection of reference and literature. The Internet, the Library Media Center’s On-line catalog (OPAC), the New Haven Free Public Library's On-line Catalog, and software programs can be accessed from anywhere in the school.
The staff works collaboratively with the Library Media Specialist to plan thematic units, who further identifies that portion of the collection and technology which will enrich their instructional programs. The above is made feasible by a newly developed flex schedule and a mapping of all grades with a monthly list of all core objectives. The Library Media Center services our students, teachers, support staff and parents throughout the regular school day, as well as during our extended school day program.
Our global family works towards one goal by assisting our students in gaining an enhanced awareness of their lives and world through the use of our resources and equipment. Furthermore, our students develop to their fullest potential and are active curious learners. They excel in the fundamentals of education: literacy, math, and science.
Having a solid foundation of these literacy and information processing skills, will enable East Rock students to assume a productive role in an information age that is integral to our global economy. Without a widespread, systematic integration of literacy and technology into our curricula, the need for knowledge workers will be left unmet and the students’ economic position in the world economy will be uncertain.
