Brr-iiii-ng! A fifth grader at Hill Central Elementary School is home after school, and has a problem with his math homework. His mom isn't due home for a few more hours.
He can call Dial-A-Teacher Homework Helpline at 946-6580 and be connected with a certified New Haven public school teacher who will guide him through the math problem.
As more and more parents head back into the workforce, helping children with their homework has become an even more challenging task shared by schools and families alike. The New Haven Public Schools has come up with a homework help hotline designed to help New Haven students with homework questions.
The program is an innovative partnership between the school system and SNET. Housed in the library media center of Roberto Clemente Middle School, certified teachers from the New Haven public schools are on hand Mondays through Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to help staff the help line and also to help students in person with homework problems.
Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. said the new program is one of many examples in which city departments and the school system work togethear. "Often, our children flock to the local neighborhood library after school to study, so this is a neat marriage between the library and the school system. This gives us yet another chance to engage our young children and to promote the building blocks for academic success," the Mayor said.
"Dial-A-Teacher offers a unique opportunity for our students to stay connected to school outside the classroom," Dr. Mayo said. "It can also serve as a resource to help parents work with their children at home." Students and parents may call 946-6580 with questions about specific homework problems. Bilingual teachers are on hand to help guide the callers.
