The Comprehensive Arts Program was established by the New Haven Board of Education in the 1970's to address the arts education policy and goals of the board, which state that all students in grades pre-k to 12th should have experiences in music, visual arts, dance and drama as an integral part of their education. Based on the principle that the arts are essential in a quality education for every child, Comprehensive Arts supports diverse programs in music, the visual arts, dance and drama, promotes arts integrated core curriculum to increase academic achievement, and fosters collaborations with the many excellent arts organizations in New Haven.

The goals of the program are:

• Implement and support a new arts curriculum based on national and state standards that will enable students to understand and appreciate all arts expressions throughout their lives.
• Sustain continuous professional development for teachers of all art disciplines.
• Support professional artists visits, residencies and performances in all the New Haven public schools.
• Broaden school administrators and classroom teachers understanding of the compelling and growing research on the role the arts play in improving academic achievement and the contributions of the arts to school reform.
• Serve as Resource Center for research, information and support materials for art teachers, and for classroom teachers who want to incorporate the arts into their subject areas.
• Foster collaborations between the New Haven public schools and the numerous and excellent arts organizations in the community.
• Increase public understanding, appreciation, and support for the diverse arts programs taking place in the New Haven public schools.
