About
Hill Regional Career High School focuses on providing students with the skills and education necessary to pursue careers in the fields of health, business and computer technology. Ninety-eight percent of Career graduates go on to study in two and four-year colleges. Partnerships with local universities, businesses and community service organizations provide students with unique educational experiences like dissecting cadavers alongside Yale medical students to building, programming and marketing robots.
As a college preparatory school, Career models students' class experience to resemble college, with longer class periods lasting 82 minutes and focused areas of study. Career offers Advanced Placement and honors courses and students can pursue independent studies at local colleges to earn college credits.
Classes and internships sponsored by Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale School of Nursing and Southern Connecticut State University Nursing program allow students in Career's Nurse's Aid program to graduate with both state and Emergency Medical Technician certification, allowing them direct entry into the workforce.
Career offers students specialized instruction in the areas of finance and information technology. Students have the opportunity to network with local business resources, providing them with hands-on-experience where they can apply skills learned in class to "real world" situations. Class instruction includes courses in economics, finance, and banking. Business students also run a school-based store.
Career was named one of 20 exemplary alternative schools by Phi Lambda Kappa, a national education fraternity. "Redbook" magazine identified Career as one of 155 top schools in the country for "its innovative and successful programs as well as its commitment to excellence."
Students entering Career in 9th grade have the opportunity to participate in the school's AHEAD program where they visit the school in the summer, meet teachers, staff and other students and learn about the school's academic expectations and educational opportunities.

Career provides a challenging curriculum aligned with national, state and district standards as well as career exploration programs to prepare students for entry into the fields of business/technology and health/science. Career develops differentiated instruction based on individual assessments of each student. Teachers, guidance counselors and parents help students chose a focused area of study, in addition to their core academic classes. Students are required to complete 28 credits to graduate, more credits than mandated by the state. Students must take two years of Latin; additional foreign language courses are highly encouraged. Also, keyboarding classes are required in recognition of the central role computers play in all of today's careers.
