Chefs Move to Schools

We are delighted that Chefs want to work with our students in our schools and encourage the Chefs to work with us but we also have some basic steps that need to be followed prior to coming into our schools:

·         Any Chef who is interested in coming into our schools to do a demo is REQUIRED to go to the Chefs Move to Schools website and sign up: http://healthymeals.nal.usda.gov/schoolmeals/Chef/ChefsForm.php.

·         Please fill out the required information and adopt the school you are interested in working in.

·         When you receive the confirmation email, please forward it to Timothy Cipriano, the Executive Director of Food Services with your contact information. Tim’s email is timothy.cipriano@new-haven.k12.ct.us.

"We are going to need everyone's time and talent to solve the childhood obesity epidemic and our Nation's chefs have tremendous power as leaders on this issue because of their deep knowledge of food and nutrition and their standing in the community. I want to thank them for joining the Let's Move! Campaign" - First Lady Michelle Obama

Chefs across the country are answering Mrs. Obama's call to get involved with their local schools as part of the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, run through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The First Lady is calling on chefs to get involved by adopting a school and working with teachers, parents, school nutritionists and administrators to help educate kids about food and nutrition.

New Haven answered the call; when the First Lady's office called Chef Tim to ask for assistance, Chef Tim responded with a resounding YES. Chef Tim joined an elite group of Chefs from across the country to design a program to engage children in the classroom through food and nutrition...Chefs Move to Schools!

Chefs Move to Schools, New Haven Style!
Wednesday 10/20/10 NH SchoolFood kicked off Chefs Move! to Schools in the garden of Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet School at 10am.

A press conference was held at 10:00am and guest chefs did cooking demos in classrooms, much more intimate for the children and a great way to show off the program better to the media and invited guests.

Our goal to fill the Barnard School Garden with Chefs in white coats similar to the South Lawn of the White House when the First Lady kicked off the campaign was acheived! We said Let’s Move and make this happen bigger and better than anywhere else and the Chefs Moved!!! We had Chefs interested in reading food related stories to students, performing cooking demos for students in their classes and just talking to children about healthy food and the cool things you can do with it. The chuildren in several classrooms that Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and I visited loved our apple peeler, slicer corer, they loved twirling the apples through and creating apple skin ribbons or spaghetti and eating them, the contraption also slices the apples and cores them and the kids then consumed the whole apple! It is a great educational tool and a great way to get kids excited about REAL FOOD!
